Breakfast at the Terraced Rice Fields
The charming Inagura rice terraces in Ueda City have been designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields. The seamlessly connected fields flow along the contours of the valley where cultivated land touches the uninhabited mountains, representing the traditional Japanese principles of respect for and coexistence with the natural world.
These fields nearly fell into disuse as they have lower yield and there was already a labor shortage in agriculture, but the local community refused to let that happen and organized to protect and restore them. With “terraces to be worked, not just looked at” as their motto, their efforts have maintained the beautiful scenery you can see today. And the Okazaki Brewery, who have brewed brilliantly translucent premium sake in Ueda for 350 years, contribute to protecting the breathtaking vista of the terraces by growing their sake rice here.
KURABITO STAY is proud to be part of this new tourism venture that the brewery has launched to celebrate and preserve their beautiful traditional surroundings. Ken’ichi Okazaki, President of the Okazaki Brewery, crafted this special experience of viewing the rice terraces at their most beautiful – glowing in the morning light – while enjoying breakfast from the area with the finest view. Drenched in morning sun, the terraces overflow with vitality and provide a feast for your eyes, while the earth cushions your feet and you smell, touch, and taste the bounty of the fields.
The minimalist breakfast area is designed to let you relax and fully experience the breathtaking scenery of the terraces shining in the morning light. We can’t wait to welcome you with rice balls made with freshly cooked rice from these very fields, served with side dishes made from fermented local produce.
* Part of the program fee will be donated to the Inagura no Tanada Hozen Iinkai (committee for the protection of the Inagura rice terraces) to support their activities.
